Photo Challenge: Reflecting

It’s the job of a hero
to stand a strong wind,
invincible against a dark
sky, giving us pause to

reflect on the sum of our
inadequacies and hopes
too precious to name.
Could I be that strong,

that resilient, with decades
behind me and a dwindling
future? She holds her ground,
with steady eyes and no

apology. Our lesser nature
demands that we measure
ourselves with cold calculation
and doubt, though the hero

makes no claims against us.
Without blame, she holds an
open space beside her. Step
up, she says. There’s room.

(WordPress Photo Challenge is a weekly prompt to share a photo–I enjoy twisting these macro prompts to share our micro life here on the Colorado prairie. I take these photos with my phone, on my farm. No psych, definitely not high-tech.)

  1. Looks to me like those ears hold the sky, which is kind of along the same thought. Then I think, would I be that way if I wasn’t always looking backward and forward rather than in the now? But being me I plan how I’ll be in the now… lol *sigh* This is another one I’ll print and put on my refrigerator. Thank you

  2. This is beautiful, I’d be so blessed to own a donkey but for now I settle for the call of one I hear from the nearby farm, I always smile when I hear the bray

  3. Made my toast and coffee, opened up my computer and saw this photo, really made me smile, what a beautiful girl. Please give her a scratch and rub from me on that awesome little topknot x

  4. Thanks Anna. As someone who is facing a “dwindling future,” this poem struck home. Of course I may not be helping the situation by riding a green “mare” regularly at 76. But it is such a big part of my life right now I cannot quit. I just hope I can have the spirit of your donkey as the days pass by. Beautiful.

    • That’s my plan, Fred. That old donkey is doing it right. She feels good enough to chase the goat, and that’s my standard, too. 🙂 Have a great summer with your mares, Fred. Thanks for checking in.

  5. She is a Zen Master. I need and appreciate frequent reminders to wake up to the here and now. Thank you to you and Lilith.
