Travelblog Photo &Poem: Dog Hair

Reviewing talking points, morning
coffee cooling in a contemporary
hotel room eight thousand miles
from my prairie farm. Dressing for

a teaching day, I unpack the red
vest to find a few stray white hairs,
thinner than my own, reminding
me of the one at home who doesn’t

know I have a job, the one who misses
me too much. Home-sweetness seeps
into the air, “Good dog,” recalibrating
my posture, not brushing them away.

  1. Ah, so familiar. Love, love, love this. Three big dogs here, one of whom sheds more than any dog I’ve ever met in my life. I own a carpet rake and three different pet specialty vacuums. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!

  2. I am wearing one of those velcro-close boots now due to a fracture. It has so much dog hair stuck in the velcro, I cannot even get it loose if I wanted to. I am thinking the doc is going to love that when I go back in next week for a check point.

  3. This is the downside of traveling. I miss them and worry about them SO much. I understand you what you are feeling.

  4. Reminds me of finding random hairs of the pets that left on their last journey without me. An old pair of barn boots and a jacket stored away. Memories stored in quiet places.

  5. A badge of love and a tie to home. I love the idea that my heart rests in a nest of my beloved four footed friend’s shed hair.

  6. Of course you didn’t brush them away!
Nov 3-4 will soon be here ♥️
    Portland, Oregon time!

  8. I never brush off the dog hair so in a way my boys go with me when I leave home without them. Smoky is shedding hair puppies which hide under the baseboard heat and occasionally roll across the floor to be captured and held a second before going in the trash. But the hairs he leaves on my clothes stay.
